Tips on Pipes and Home Plumbing for New DIY Plumbers! Minor home plumbing issues can be easily tackled and the best part is YOU DO IT YOURSELF. Yup, you heard that correctly. You get to become a plumber for the day! Although plumbing issues can be intimidating, that should not stop you from fixing the smallest issues. Fixing minor pipes and home plumbing can benefit you in many ways. Doing it yourself can help you SAVE hundreds of dollars and you can learn some new tricks to show off to friends. To help you start off we have gathered a few tips to get you started! 5 useful tips for New DIY Plumbers:

1) Know how your home plumbing water pipes work

It is important to understand how home plumbing and pipes work. You will be able to learn about different sizes in pipes and the pipe materials that are commonly used. The easiest way is through searching for diagrams with common pipes inside the home.

2) Different types of pipes

Do you know what the key fundamental part of home plumbing is? Yup, it’s pipes. As a beginner, you are not going to think about the different pipes there are. THERE IS A LOT. There is white plastic, galvanized, copper, cast-iron, and black steel. With a variety of pipes, the size varies for each one as well.

3) Purchase the tools you need.

Before you even get started on anything you are going to need to purchase the correct tools. You might even have some of these tools hanging around your house. So, make sure you have all the necessities before starting! There is nothing worse than having to go buy a tool in the middle of fixing something. So, avoid that problem and go visit your neighborhood store and purchase those tools!

4) Do not be afraid to change parts.

Changing plumbing parts for the first time can be intimidating. If it is too nerve-wracking to change pipes under the sink or shower, start by changing smaller pieces. Start with simple pieces like the toilet flapper or even the sink cartridge. Changing the easier pieces will help you build confidence to change bigger parts like pipes.

5) Use heat to loosen up the water pipe fittings.

Sometimes you won’t be able to get the tight pipe fitting under the sink. To make your life and job easier try using heat to loosen up the pipe fitting. You do not need a crazy fire gun to do this but a small and simple propane torch will do. Keep in mind though that you will need to apply the heat for a couple of minutes to see any progress happening. Also, use heat-resistant material to keep nearby walls protected. Importantly, DO NOT USE ON OR NEXT TO GAS PIPES, AND PLASTIC PIPES OR FITTINGS.
